We will start our week at the beginning. After a short drive up the mountain we will visit the Mina De La Valenciana. Discovered in 1548 by Juan de Rayas the Valenciana mine is one of worlds leading producers of Silver and the foundation of the wealth of the city. Although the mother vein of Guanajuato was discovered in 1548, the Valenciana mine reached its highest production levels from 1768 to 1804. The mine produced 60% of the world silver production in the 18th century. Guanajuato was the world’s leading silver district, with the Valenciana mine producing about 30% of the world’s total supply. The mine continues to operate today along with another 15 mines in the region. After the mine we will walk next door to the Templo de La Valenciana. Built between 1775 and 1788. It is dedicated to San Cayetano, confessor and patron saint of the miners. Built the churrigueresque style in pink quarry, its altar and altarpieces are covered with laminated gold. At the beginning, it belonged to the Hospitaller Order of the Latinos, who built, next to the Temple, a convent that they did not occupy and that today houses the School of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Guanajuato.

We will embark upon a 3 hour driving tour of the city of Guanajuato. Riding in a trolley our guide will take us throughout the city providing insight into the rich history of Guanajuato while visiting various landmarks.

A shopping and sightseeing excursion to San Miguel De Allende (SMA). SMA is a small town but with a large expat population which has helped promote it as one of the best towns in Mexico. The drive will take about 1 hour. We will walk the centro area and shop at some of the wonderful SMA stores.
